Turpentine Creek Rescues Yet Another Tiger!

Turpentine Creek Staff Members Travel To Southern Texas To Pick Up Colby, A Bengal Tiger.

Watch video below.

Turpentine Creek staff members, Scott and Tanya traveled to Rosenberg, Texas to pick up a Bengal tiger needing a home. The private owner was having trouble with local officials and neighbors. He was facing a $2,000.00/day fine if he didn't find a home for Colby soon. Monday, April 28 we arrived at the rural home about 10:00 AM and had Colby loaded in the trailer and was headed north to Eureka Springs by 3:00 PM. Several hours were spent waiting on the local vet to get the needed permits to travel. Colby arrived at the Refuge the following day. He made the trip well.

Turpentine Creek Gets Animals You Can Pet.

Both “Savannah” and “Pistol Pete” (“Petey” for short) are registered miniatures and were born at Splendor Farms in Indiana.  They came to live with their new “people” in SW Missouri in December of 1999.  There, they loved and were loved as they settled in and quickly became family members.

In December of 2002, baby “Donqui O.T.” was born.  What an exciting time!!! Although he was very tiny at birth, he grew and grew and grew and ended up bigger than both his mom and dad. Because of his height, he is too tall to meet the requirements for registration as a miniature, even though he is much smaller than the standard donkeys.

Since their “people” are a retired couple the three animals were living the ideal life, and were doted upon with lots of love and attention.  After the couple began to develop some health problems, they found it difficult to give the donkeys the care and attention they so deserved.

The couple was very familiar with Turpentine Creek, coming to know many of the workers and helping with some of the fundraiser's, they knew that here their beloved donkeys would be properly cared for and receive lots of love and attention, not only from the dedicated staff but also from the many visitors who frequent the facility.

Although their “people” will miss the three donkeys terribly, the three delightful animals will be receiving visits from them on a regular basis…. probably with some special treats in their pockets.

The 2008 Blues Weekend will feature: KOKO TAYLOR

Koko Taylor truly is the undisputed Queen of the Blues. Her latest release "Old School" is clearly one of her finest, garnering yet another Grammy nomination for Taylor. Over the course of her almost 50-year career, Taylor has received just about every award the blues world has to offer and then some. She’s received Grammy nominations for seven of her last eight Alligator albums, and she won a Grammy in 1984 for the live multi-artist album Blues Explosion on Atlantic Records. In 2004 she was presented with the coveted National Heritage Fellowship Award from the National Endowment For The Arts. She holds 25 Blues Music Awards (more than any other blues artist, male or female). A major feather in her cap came on March 3, 1993, when Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley honored Taylor with a Legend Of The Year Award, and declared “Koko Taylor Day” throughout Chicago. In 1998, Chicago Magazine named her “Chicagoan Of The Year,” and in 1999, Taylor was inducted into the Blues Foundation’s Hall Of Fame. “There are many kings of the blues,” said The Boston Globe, “but only one queen. Koko’s voice is still capable of pinning a listener to the back wall.”

TRAMPLED UNDER FOOT

Opening for Koko Taylor will be 2008 International Blues Challenge winners Trampled Under Foot, featuring siblings Danielle, Nick and Kris Schnebelen. They bested some 100 bands from around the world at The Blues Foundation's annual battle of blues bands in Memphis last month. Danielle was the talk of Beale Street, wowing people with both her bass playing and her amazing vocals, and Nick won a new Gibson guitar and Category 5 amp for the Albert King Award for Most Promising Guitarist.

INDIGENOUS

Indigenous is easily the most recognized Native American music act around the world. The band was formed my Mato Nanji and his brothers and sister in the late 1990s. They released their first CD "Things We Do" in 1998, gaining both critical and popular success. They quickly became Native American ambassadors of The Blues, performing around the world. After creating two more studio albums, Mato's brothers and sister went on to pursue other musical interests. From the beginning Mato's songwriting, singing, and

Guitar playing were the base for the group, so he decided to forge his own way as the face of Indigenous. Mato continued to hone his guitar and singing skills, keeping the band alive. As time progressed, sister Windi and brother Pate worked with Mato to help write and record "Chasing The Sun", Indigenous' latest CD. "Chasing The Sun" carries on the trademarks of Indigenous' earlier efforts... explosive guitar licks, inventive solos, and an

Inexorable sense of rhythm that harkens back to Jimmy Reed, one of Mato's prime influences.

LOUIS JORDAN TRIBUTE

Opening for Indigenous will be acoustic guitar virtuoso Rory Block, and a 100th Birthday Tribute to The "Jukebox King" Louis Jordan, featuring Phil Berkowitz and The Sean Carney Band. Rory Block's most recent album was a moving tribute to Robert Johnson. She is a true acoustic guitar virtuoso, and has earned a wide following around the world with her amazing fingerpicking. Phil Berkowitz's latest CD "Louis' Blues" showcased Jordan's music and his show documents Jordan's musical legacy on everything from Rock

and Roll to Rap. Backing Berkowitz will be The Sean Carney Band, the 2007 IBC winner. Louis Jordan was born in Brinkley, Arkansas in 1908, and went on to chart 57 Top-40 hits (54 Top-10), including "Let The Good Times Roll", "Caledonia", "Saturday Night Fish Fry", and "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie". Jordan's recordings were #1 Billboard hits for an amazing 28 weeks, and he still ranks in the top five R&B artists of all time.

AT THE BASIN PARK HOTEL – BAREFOOT BALLROOM

Major Blues acts will also perform in The Barefoot Ballroom in the Basin Park Hotel. Friday will feature Blues diva LZ Love and Baton Rouge Blues guitarist Larry Garner. LZ Love is an amazing vocalist and songwriter who has backed greats like Billy Preston and Mary Wells, and was featured on the compilation San Francisco Bay's Best Blues. Larry Garner is best known for his hits "Juke Joint Woman" and "Keep On Playing The Blues", and has appeared at Blues festivals and clubs around the world.

On Saturday evening The Barefoot Ballroom will feature Deborah Coleman, and Arkansas' own Michael Burks. Ruf Records artist Deborah Coleman is, as USA Today notes, “one of blues music’s most exciting young talents.” Along with a discography that now spans a decade; she also gives knockout live performances that have made her one of the hottest commodities on the contemporary blues scene. Deborah is a feature artist on The Blues Caravan's "Guitars and Feathers Tour", appearing around the world with fellow Ruf Records artists Candye Kane and Dani Wilde. Michael Burks will be touring to support a new Alligator Records CD, which will be released next month. Both

Artists and their bands are known throughout the world for high energy shows that get everyone up and boogieing from "can until can't"! Also, LZ Love will perform two club sets in the hotel's Ozark Room on Saturday.

Basin Spring Park will host bands throughout the weekend, ending late Sunday afternoon. Appearing in Basin Park Saturday morning will be internationally acclaimed Blues educator Michael "Hawkeye" Herman, who will conduct a special "Kids and The Blues" session. Also appearing in Basin Park are several of the bands playing in the clubs, as well as area artists eager to share their music with you and our visitors. Also, clubs across Eureka Springs will be featuring Blues artists, and many have really kicked it up a

Notch, bringing in some excellent regional and national acts.
